Certificate of Authorization

Section 34-11-9 of the Licensure Law provides that partnerships, corporation or firms offering engineering or land surveying services in Alabama must have a certificate of authorization issued by the Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.  Prior to applying for a certificate of authorization there must be an individual who is a principal officer licensed in Alabama. If your firm has not qualified with the Alabama Secretary of State’s Office, you should contact them to request the necessary forms.

A licensee practicing engineering or land surveying in his or her own given name, i.e. Jane Doe, P.E. or Joe Smith, P.L.S., does not require a certificate of authorization.  If an individual is practicing under a fictitious name, i.e. Jane Doe Engineering or Joe Smith Surveying, then the individual is required to have a certificate of authorization.

One or more of the principal officers of the corporation, firm, or partners of the partnership and all personnel of the corporation, partnership, or firm who act in its behalf as professional engineers or professional land surveyors in this state must be licensed by this state.

Each separate office or branch office in which engineering or land surveying services are performed or offered to be performed must have a resident licensed professional engineer or land surveyor in responsible charge of the engineering or land surveying work.

If your company offers both engineering and land surveying services, you will need to have separate certificates of authorization for engineering and land surveying.

If the company which you are associated with requires application forms for filing for this Certificate of Authorization, download the appropriate application and instructions below.  The same forms are used if there is a change in the company name or in any of the partners or principal officers during the year.

The Certificate of Authorization form can be completed in the PDF format.  Just click where you want to start typing.  However, it cannot be saved.  You must print it when you finish typing.

If you have any questions concerning the Certificate of Authorization, call Rich Deem at (334) 353-7157 or by e-mail.
